This is a very well written technical note. Something Apple should be proud of. Oh, of course, it was not the great Apple Tech Support. Well done!! I am glad that there are people like you out there. Thanks.

OK. this all worked for me beautifully when I first set it up, BUT:
As soon as I reboot, connecting no longer works with the newly created Serial ports. This is what I see in the ppp log when trying to connect:
Fri Mar 6 10:37:31 2009 : Apple Base Script.ccl Version 3.3
Fri Mar 6 10:37:31 2009 : CCLWrite : AT\13
Fri Mar 6 10:37:31 2009 : CCLMatched : OK\13\10
Fri Mar 6 10:37:31 2009 : Initializing phone: AT&FE0Q0V1&C1&D2+IFC=3,1
Fri Mar 6 10:37:31 2009 : CCLWrite : AT&FE0Q0V1&C1&D2+IFC=3,1\13
Fri Mar 6 10:37:31 2009 : CCLMatched : ERROR\13\10
Fri Mar 6 10:37:31 2009 : Modem error; the modem is not responding.
Fri Mar 6 10:37:31 2009 : CCLExit: -6019 (Modem error, modem not responding.)

(The same AT commands work perfectly before, which I can verify from older log entries.

I'm using 2 Nokia phones here - an E51 and an E71. Both have exactly the same problem - AFTER rebooting. to make this work again, I must delete the phones from the Bluetooth devices, re-pair them and go through the whole setup process again. It works, but only till I reboot (or put the computer to sleep, as I don't reboot very often).

This is driving me insane - Anyone experienced this?

PS - Regular Bluetooth connections work just fine, even after rebooting. But then I obviously lose the ability to have both my phones tethered to my Macbook Pro.

I've been looking for how to do this for over a year! Your post was really helpful. Thanks.

Apple should really have a support article for this!

Last time I tethered my cell phone (using the usb cable), the stupid thing decided to create "Motorola V3m 1". I then had to copy all the settings over from the original config ("Motorola V3m") which had worked fine and auto-detected previously. I wonder if I plugged it into a different USB port or something. I suspect these things will get simpler in the future.

Hi,

Do you have the "unable to find modem" popup when your USB modem is not connected and you're trying to reach the network ? I'm trying to get rid of that.
Cheers.
